Famous House – The White House

If you, like many other people were asked to name a famous house you may have a few suggestions that spring to mind, Anne Franks house, The little House on The Prairie and of course, The White House. This article will have a look at probably the most famous house in the world and a true symbol of the American people.

The White house has stood for over 200 years and is one of the most iconic symbols of the American Government. It has housed many of the US Presidents and their families over the years and has seen through whatever the times have thrown at them. The House is well recognized as a solid structure in America and a location that houses the president and his administration.

Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue the building was completed in 1800. The White house had started in the design stages by 1790 when then President George Washington was in power yet the building was not completed until John Adams took on the role of President.

Irish born architect James Hoban was selected to design the building among 8 additional competitors. Hoban was awarded a gold medal for his work, and was well noted for his practical and handsome design.

Construction began in 1792 as the first cornerstone was laid. George Washington oversaw the construction of the house whilst still running the country yet never lived there. Since the occupation of President Adams each president that followed each made their own changes to the building in the areas of the private residence to make the place more individual to their taste.

President Thomas Jefferson was the first to open the White House, allowing it to become an open house. This remained tradition until after the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, when the crowds become too large and the way in which this was done had to be changed.

Times and styles have changed over the last 200 years and the White House is no exception to this. There are somethings that have remained over time yet what the White house stands for, remains firm even today. The building currently consists of 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 6 levels in the Residence area.
